Albania and the European Union (EU) signed a security and defence partnership agreement, aimed at advancing security and defence cooperation on the path to EU integration, Albania’s defence minister Pirro Vengu said.
Albania will gain greater access to European resources and opportunities to strengthen its armed forces, while contributing to the EU’s operational commitments, Vengu said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
“This agreement shows that we will do more together. It clearly shows investment in our common security. It shows that Albania will be around all these important tables where we discuss the security and defence of Europe and it also allows us smoother flow of information, which is very important, and allows us to expand our cooperation in fighting hybrid threats, misinformation, cyber resilience, tackling terrorism, the worries that we have both in Europe and also in the Western Balkans,” Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said in a press conference streamed by the Council of EU on its website on Wednesday.
The EU on Tuesday opened negotiations with Albania on a second thematic cluster of accession talks.
