Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has complained in a recent social media post that an interview for Dutch public broadcaster NOS-NTR, that he has given in good faith, has been reedited in order to distort the original message.
In his Facebook the Minister stated that “The following parts were cut out from the broadcast, and they were replaced retrospectively by the sentences “Hungary is Putin’s good friend” and everything else we could get used to. The “Dutch version” will arrive in the afternoon, but until then, at least, it should be clear here.”
Asked by the reporter if Hungary feels isolated in the EU when its peace efforts are not supported, the Foreign Minister said that there are more people in Brussels who support them than those who openly take this position. He said they dare not challenge leading views on the grounds of cohesion, fearing pressure from NGOs and the media.
“On the other hand, the world is much broader than Europe or the transatlantic alliance, and the global majority, like Africa, Latin America, Asia, want peace. All the more so because they are also struggling with similar problems, food shortages, energy crises, inflation because of war,” he said. He added:
“This clearly shows that Hungary belongs to the global majority in terms of its pro-peace stance.”
There was also a question about how the Hungarians would feel if Russia invaded the country and they did not receive support, to which Szijjártó responded that it had already happened to us in 1956, so we know how it feels. The Foreign Minister rejected the assertion that it seems that we would welcome the United States outside NATO because Hungary is also closely linked to the Kremlin.
As for the European Parliament, the minister said he hoped they would be successful in the next elections, although when asked he admitted that he considered the Brussels assembly to be one of the most corrupt in the world, a view backed up by recent arrests. He criticized the lack of a concrete methodology to detect and deal with such cases in the interests of transparency. He criticized the fact that the Ombudsman is not being provided with the European Commission’s text messages concerning the billions of euros spent on procurement and the ordering of vaccines.
