NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed that at the summit in Vilnius a decision will be made to cancel the MAP procedure for Ukraine in order to accept it into the Alliance.
He announced this during a forum in Vilnius, writes DW.
“Ukraine has come a long way since we decided in 2008 that the next step would be the MAP. Ukraine has become much closer to NATO and I think it’s time to reflect this in NATO decisions. We will make it clear that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance. If we cancel the MAP, this will be a very strong and positive signal to Ukraine from NATO,” the Secretary General of the Alliance said.
Stoltenberg promises to publish the exact wording on Ukraine, which will be included in the summit communiqué, in a few hours. Now it is still being discussed.
